In order to maintain a comfortable atmosphere, every space/structure/building needs to sleep for a certain amount of time. By sleeping, its powers are restored, which is measurable in the growth of the sleep space. The sleep space is defined as the third space beside the inside and outside of a wall - an in-between-space that is not visible, but perceptible.
The Apple store on 14th Street and 9th Avenue, as a figurehead for 21st century capitalism, was chosen because it is fit to represent the emerging sleeplessness of our society. It is therefore not only a conceptual but also a symbolic gesture to use the new structure to put the Apple store to sleep.
As a formal inspiration the mechanism of the hexaflexagon was investigated. As a flat structure, that reveals a third, hidden space when flexed it was aggregated and partly deconstructed to form inhabitable eyelid spaces.
Regardless of time the structure unfolds once its host building has used up a certain amount of energy. With the act of unfolding it obstructs the entrance to the building, initiates the process of the restoration of powers - not only by shutting down the buildings use, but also by allowing people to access the unfolded structure and making the sleep space perceptible. The eyelid spaces are used for napping and the charging of devices.
