”High Time for Low Tech” tackles Mid to low-density areas in the U.S. that are prone to be in desert-like conditions by the end of the century by choosing an adaptation+mitigation approach. The project aims to cut household energy consumption in half by mid-century by eliminating the need for mechanical heating and cooling. It is focussed on Low-tech principles and their adaptability to the somewhat unpredictably changing climate.

The design proposal includes two low tech housing prototypes: a two family home and a mid-rise apartment building.

Both structures are made from bricks as a human scale low tech material. As technology advances kiln fired bricks can be replaced by grown bricks or mud bricks. Both prototypes make use of existing thermodynamic concepts - partly informed by vernacular architecture - but frame them in a future-oriented, adaptable way.


As the climate changes and the air gets hotter and dryer growing crops outdoors with limited water supply will become more and more challenging. At the same time winters will be warmer and the need for a heating buffer layer disappears. Consequently buildings can strip their buffer layers and they can be turned into greenhouses for agriculture in which water can be recycled through evaporation. As buffer layers are detached, activities like cooking move towards the center of the structure. This transformation is simultaneously allowing for more independence from possibly scarce food sources in the future.

While this large wave of new low tech public housing is being built, it can inform the way we think about retrofitting - instead of plastering buildings with ecologically questionable insulation foams we should be considering all low tech solutions presented (adding solar chimneys, more thermal mass, buffer layers etc.)

Manaus, the biggest urban agglomeration in the middle of the Amazon rainforest is a popular destination for many indigenous people. The decision to move to the city can stem from a combination of factors. It is often associated with expectations of a better standard of living, but mostly also the result of increasing extraction and exploitation of the rainforest and violation of demarcated indigenous territories. Manaus, being the largest city in the Amazon region is a logical choice for many. Most indigenous communities who live in the periphery of the city have limited access to infrastructure, education and healthcare. Simultaneously, the common experience of discrimination and prejudice faced by these minorities leads to suppression of the people’s indigenous identity, and crucially, their language. In many indigenous cultures, oral history and story-telling are central to the passing of culture and knowledge from one generation to the next. There are 19 different indigenous languages spoken in Manaus. Unfortunately, these languages and the culture embedded within them are often at risk in Portuguese speaking Manaus. Our project proposes a network of community centers, focused on the strengthening and adaptation of urban indigenous culture through language revitalization. It will aim to counteract the loss of indigenous cultural identity in the urban context, promote visibility and support the fight for political representation. By providing audio/visual recording and broadcasting programs, education, archive and gathering spaces, the network will allow interaction and coordination between different indigenous groups as well as cross-cultural community exchange. Existing initiatives already present in the community will find a home within the space, making the community center a beacon that draws together support for indigenous groups while simultaneously broadcasting their knowledge and narratives across the Manaus network and potentially throughout the Amazon at large.

In seeking to accommodate young-old inhabitants as a growing cohort that is gradually retiring but physically mobile, this project imagines a housing model of reduction of the private sphere in order to provide a maximum of differentiated common spaces. 


Each “Sub-Unit” - representing the most private space and housing one individual or couple - spans between two “Service Walls”. Three Sub-Units form a Unit which provides the inhabitants with a shared kitchen and semi-private reading and living spaces. The ground floor consists entirely of common spaces which are divided into sections dedicated to the body, the mind and social activities.

A library to counteract temporal illiteracy by removing all means of storing information but one: human brains circulating through the space of perpetual information exchange. Different modes and speeds of circulation provide temporal education through loss of time, stretching of time, compression of time and finding time.

While the inner skin is translucent and exposes plumbing and circulation between the skins to the inside, the outer skin is completely opaque emphazising elevators as the only mode of entering the library. Once entered the elevator (they all move at different speeds depending on the performance space they lead to) the user is being deprived of sound and visuals to prepare and sensitize the brain for the approaching time warp.

The loss of time perception is enforced by loss of planar floors and rectalinear space in the performance spaces. 

After going through the experienced time warp visitors gather on the roof to reflect on the performances and slowly re-acclimatize to the outside world.

This microbial fuel cell uses microbes living in soil to generate electricity. Recessed in public lawns it provides friends and strangers with power for their devices as well as facts about soil health and its microbial environment.

	The Intentional Estates Agency [IEA] adopts and modifies the mechanisms of desire and commodity logic of a real estate agency to engage issues of degrowth. It offers a brochure of sixteen portfolios of degrowth options that draw from a catalog of historical, contemporary and speculative intentional communities and social experiments from around the world. Rather than an emphasis on cost, location or square footage, these portfolios foreground, for example, communal metrics, platforms for collective sharing, and resource management.

Designed as an interactive questionnaire, the brochure prompts participants to discover a portfolio that might be suitable for them as a means to consider new forms of value outside of current habits, behaviors and the status quo. Participants navigate through a series of questions that pose value-based dilemmas towards four areas of concern (Environment, Labor, Mobility and Technology). Once in a matrix for an area of concern, participants are guided through another set of value-based questions towards a unique portfolio which houses exemplary (or counter-exemplary) degrowth case study options. The IEA supports the need to locate alternative pathways out of a paradigm of limitless growth and expand an empirical understanding of how design can support new forms of society and value systems.


The Intentional Estates Agency was presented at the 2019 Oslo Architecture Triennale, “Enough: The Architecture of Degrowth.”

This project was developed in a collaborative design studio with representatives of Vienna’s city government, engineering students and architecture students. 

It is a proposal for an elementary school in one of Vienna’s densifying areas. Complying with the City of Vienna’s recently developed new pedagogical concept for public elementary schools, every floor acts as a ‘cluster’ of four classrooms for children of different ages, which can be opened and closed as needed. The crucial element of our concept is the shear wall, each of which is equipped with a ‘service backpack’ (i.e. bathrooms, elevators, storage) for the communal area and a shelving system for the classrooms themselves.

In order to comply with Vienna’s fire regulations there are two fire escapes which were implemented in the design alongside spacious balconies that allow for interaction between the clusters during warm seasons. To benefit the public the roof gym is separately accessible and can be used for community events.
